Drive-In Theater and WHAT ABOUT BOB?

Who doesn't have fond nostalgic memories of going to the Drive-In picture show?! The sound was awful, the windows always fogged up (hey stop that! I was a little kid in footsie pajamas and they still fogged up!)

Well your next leisurely drive around Smith Mountain Lake might land you in line for the picture show! Proposed Open Date of July 4th! This drive-in is aimed at wholesome family fun! No "R" rated flicks til after 10pm. Oh and before I forget they will have a 50's themed diner. When you get to the end of the article I will explain my personal reasons for the first ever film to be shown at our new drive-in: "WHAT ABOUT BOB" starring straight laced Richard Dreyfuss and likable goofy Bill Murray.

The following is taken from Smith Mountain Lake Eagle newspaper written by Rebecca Jackson:

Mayberry Drive-in near the Downtown Moneta community won unanimous approval after the planning commission and developers George Aznavorian and Bob Craig ironed out residents' concerns about the outdoor movie screen's height, as well as worries about backed up traffic generated by theatergoers.

A ticket booth will be moved further back on the property on Rt. 608 (near the site of the Bedford County Public Service Authority's Moneta water treatment plant), to ease any potential problems with a line of traffic out on the main road. The developers also agreed to increase the number and size of fast-growing cedar trees used to buffer the back side of the movie screen from Rt. 608 (White House Rd.).

"When the traffic flow there warrants it, and when VDOT determines that it's the time to do so, then a traffic light will be installed," Barnes said.

Construction of Mayberry Drive-in and Diner will begin in March, with completion slated in time for a grand opening on the July 4 weekend, Craig, the developer, said. Both the drive-in and changes to zoning in connection to Sunset Cay must go before the Bedford County Board of Supervisors for approval at a meeting in February. Now back to my reasoning of the first ever picture shown at our drive-in should be WHAT ABOUT BOB. Did you know WHAT ABOUT BOB was filmed right here at Smith Mountain Lake? YES IN VIRGINIA! And the scenes in the small town in this movie were filmed in Moneta. DR LEO MARVIN's house is still there, altho privately owned. In fact, dear friends of ours a few blocks from here in Rocky Mount have some of the set and set making materials in their basement! The set designer lived here in Rocky Mount while they created this fantastically funny movie!

If you have not seen WHAT ABOUT BOB, you do not know what funny is, and it is not found in New Hampshuhhhhh! Remember Laughter is the best medicine. We all need it. I like to think of it like an extra daily dose of vitamin C in cold season. PUMP UP THE C we tell our girls. In this case PUMP UP the Dr Marvin and Bob!
