Coon dog trials and toe tappin bluegrass? You got it!

Summer afternoon - summer afternoon; to me those have always been the two most beautiful words in the English language.- Henry James

Once again, here at The Claiborne House Bed and Breakfast we had another week chock full of wonderful guests. How we continue to draw such high quality and interesting people always amazes me.
Every one was such a pleasure to have stay with us! There was even a fella here who was in the USN and worked on a couple of Tony's Aussie rigs down under while Tony was on the H.M.A.S. Adelaide! (I did notice tho that he steered clear of our Vegemite)

Since this is my first ramblings I better try to keep it short and stay on course. I have posted a short list of some of the upcoming events in the area below. See our website for a complete list under the Sites of Interest page. Let me highlight one incredible toe-tappin event for ya'll:

Blue Ridge Folklife Festival - on the grounds of our own Ferrum College and Blue Ridge Institute. You will never experience a more authentic, non-commercial festival. It is Oct 27th and runs all day (always the last Saturday in October). There you will encounter local wing dings - bands playing bluegrass, mountain, old timey and spirituals on three different stages - 1/2 hour each - all day!

Last year we had a guest from Buffalo New York come back and tell me he was in tears standing outside the chapel when he heard the Primitive Spirituals. Acappela harmonies that sound so sweet you would think they were angels blending their voices. He said "I am not a religious man, and this made me want to weep, I have never heard such beauty!"

On the other end of the spectrum, you will also hear the booming sounds of the coon dogs as they await their trials. If you have never seen a coon dog trial - let me assure you there is no judge nor jury! There is just a loud yelping dog in hot pursuit of a single racoon tail being hoisted across a large pond. The dog will do all it can to get this coon treed on the other side! You will laugh til your sides hurt!

Have you ever had homemade ice cream that you didn't have to hand crank yourself? Well mountain folk aren't that silly! They'll let an old John Deere engine crank out the best tasting sweet creamy ice cream ya ever had!

So ya like old cars? Well at the festival you will see dozens, if not hundreds of vintage cars and trucks all spit polished. Beautiful candy apple red '57 Chevy's, Roadsters, cool stuff man!
